Day 23

OK, if you are really following, you might say I'm cheating...but, here is
my "explanation"...I put previous art creations together to make a "new"
piece, so, yes, I believe it's legal because I spent several hours making it new.
This is called "sunspiral canteen"....I think it's cool. It has a sturdy body, with
batting and wooden discs between the lining and the outer pieces. The inside
is thick and plush, red corduroy. Too bad you can't see it up close. The colors
are great, and the stitching is, well, artful. It has a 10" diameter and is 2" thick.
The strap is pieced from several leftover scraps that were too pretty to toss.

Day 22

Here is the beginning (I think) of a new (and big!) project. I'll be making 48 of these quarter sun sections for a wall hanging of a type I rarely do: pattern and repeat!! can i handle it?
We'll see how it goes. It's about 8" square. What about those colors!?

Day 21

This piece is called "cosmic perspective", coincidentally, the name of a college astronomy class textbook I had. It measures 28" tall by 20" across and is made with pieced and quilted fabrics, with lots of glass and metal beads and findings, as well as specialty yarn embellishments.

Day 20

Here is another try at paper piecing. It's another sun spiral...I'm not quite "there" yet, I need more practice. I know what my weaknesses are, and I'm prepared to work on them...:)
I need to find some thin (almost tracing paper...that's too thin) that will go through the printer so I can make multiple copies of the paper piecing pattern.

Day 19

"Bright Bag" for a bright day...it's in the 90s and has been...sweet (or is that sweat?) :)
Here is a piece I like for it's random creativity. I used velvets and tapestries, it's lined with pockets and has 15" woven (colorful Guatemalan) handles. I felted (with an embellishing machine) pieced and quilted. It is 15" tall by 19" across, so it holds a lot.

Day 18

"Blue Pieces"....can you tell I have a passion for making bags? They're SO practical...and fun to carry art with you everywhere you go! This one is pieced and quilted from blue cotton scraps, is lines and has pockets, has a button closure, and a cool blue 38" embellished strap.

Day 17

This is a more optimistic piece, "sun spiral", and unlike everything up until now, it is only a piece of a piece. I'm not sure how to use it yet, so when I photographed it, it seemed fitting to add Henry's flowers to it...I am into purple and orange lately.

Day 16

This piece represents another reflection of the tragic situation in the gulf. BP is now burning sea turtles alive in its oil burn-off. What a crime and a serious statement about the mentality of human industry over the natural world. This artwork is a bag, with a reclaimed colorful leather belt for a strap. The lining is quilted dark blue satin with pockets. The parrot fish and the green turtle are appliqued with tapestry and silk scraps purchased from another artist. It contains glass beads, plastic and metal buttons. It measures 12" tall by 16.5" across with a rectangular box bottom.

Day 15

Blue Lilies. Experimented here with my serger doing lace edging with thread. This bag is lined, has pockets, a nice turquoise pin and a long 50" shoulder strap. It is 13" x 13". Plentiful room to carry all your stuff.

Day 14

Day 14 daily art is a new piece called "empathy"....with all of the environmental destruction (which is really devastating intellectually and emotionally) I turn to art to express compassion for the world. This piece is about caring for the oceans...a mermaid nurturing a baby turtle made of glass in her arms (can you see her star button bellybutton?)...sitting among the beautiful coral (which itself is an animal colony). It is made from tapestry pieces for her upper and lower body, with the strings of the tapestry pulled for her hair. I used blue chiffon to evoke motion of the water...the fabric flows loosely not being completely attached. The piece measures 16.5" tall by 8" across. Thanks for viewing. Take care of the earth.

Day 13

Here it is, Sunday, June 20, Father's Day, the day before "summer"...and I say: woo hoo,
to all of you GREAT fathers out there (and boo hoo to the bad fathers) ... in celebration of the upcoming official first day of summer, I submit my 13th daily art post: my "Blue Army Bag"! It is pieced with mostly blue, mostly cotton (but some silks and rayons, too), lined, and quilted with pockets and a sturdy, long, 49" studded woven shoulder strap. It is 11" by 11".

Day 12

Day 12 is going to feature "American Clutch"...a design that reminded me of a simple, basic down to earth clutch...nothing fancy. Has pockets and a zippered closure and an 8" braided leather handle. It measures 10" tall by 12" across.

day 11

Here is a new piece called "dragonfly pair" make from paper pieced red background (made from silk, cotton and velvet) quilted with batting and big beads (from the "fire sale") for bodies...and fishing line for antennae (can't really see it in the photograph, but looks cool in the piece). This panel measures 17" tall by 9" across.
I think I'll do more of these to give away. I like how easily they came together.

Day 10

Here is a piece from my Audubon "bird" series from an exhibit last year in Ohio. It is the "Anhinga" also called the snakebird (you can see why). The Anhinga is a coastal bird with the unfortunate inability to coat its wings with oil, so it is barely buoyant with its long neck bobbing in the water, looking like a snake. It is 18" tall by 17" across. The body is velvet. The background is various shimmery fabrics sewn in a curvy, wavy style.

Day 9

This piece is called "Asian Splendor". I made this when I was in my Asian Dreams period...
I made a few pieces with Asian fabrics, trying my hand at Asian themes...only made about 4 pieces, but, I have a lot of fabric so there's always a chance I'll make more.
This piece is 22" x 22" square (like me); pieced, quilted and embellished with beads and crystals. You can't really see it in the photo, but there are pockets (with crystals in them) where I was experimenting with fabric origami.

Day 8

Six was afraid of seven, because 789. :) Here is my newest daily art: red hot. It is a wallhanging that measures 23" tall by 14" across. I used some recently acquired beads (lots of them) from a "fire sale"...sadly, a local bead shop burned down, and the owner was closing out her inventory...I walked away with LOADS of beautiful beads, sadly for the bead owner having to part with her beads at an 80% discount. At any rate...here is "RED HOT"!

Day 7

...makes one weak (I mean week, sorry) :) Here is an African Market Bag, painted, pieced, quilted, and lightly embellished with beads and a magnetic snap closure. It has wooden handles that are also embedded with beads. Pockets (of course). Handy art.
